Abstract

Performance of construction projects has not been consistency. Factors causing the poor performances have not been clearly ascertained. This sector being the biggest beneficiary of funding, requires to establish the factors that hinder its performance. Rural roads being the drivers of economic prowess of the majority of the population in the developing countries requires an in-depth understanding from the basis of diversity of the workforce in those projects. Therefore the purpose of this paper was to investigate the extent to which project team training diversity influence the relationship between implementation process of project control systems and performance of rural roads construction projects in Kenya. It adopted cross-sectional correlational survey design where structured questionnaires, interview guide and focussed group discussion were used in obtaining data from workers in rural roads construction projects. Both descriptive and inferential methods of data analysis were used. With r= 0.533, R² = 0.284 and F (1,195) = 77.208 at p=0.000<0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected and concluded that there is a significant relationship between implementation process of project control systems and performance of rural roads construction projects in Kenya. With r= 0.804, R² = 0.647 and F (1,195) = 356.874 at p=0.000<0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected and concluded that there is a significant relationship between project team training diversity and performance of rural roads construction projects in Kenya. With r= 0.830, R² = 0.690, F (1,193) = 142.975 at p=0.144>0.05, null hypothesis was therefore failed to be rejected and it was therefore concluded that the significant relationship between implementation process of project control systems and performance of rural roads construction projects does not depend on project team training diversity. It is therefore recommended for training diversity in job related tasks for the workforce that would increase the transactive memory of the workers in sharing variety of skill among them during construction of projects. Policy on training diversity should be also be clear and adhered to within the organisation.

Abstract

This study sought to establish the influence of procurement of labour on performance of road construction projects in Kenya: A case of Nairobi County. The objective of the study was to establish the extent to which procurement of labour influences performance of road construction projects in Kenya. This study was anchored on the theory of controlling, theory of construction management, and stakeholder theory. The paradigm used was pragmatism and the research approach used was mixed methods. Cross sectional descriptive survey and correlational research design were used. The sample size was 74 senior engineers which comprised 30 senior engineers from consulting engineering firms and 44 senior engineers from construction companies; 74 managing directors which comprised 30 managing directors from consulting engineering firms and 44 managing directors from construction companies. A five point Likert type scale questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data while interview guides were used to collect qualitative data. The statistical tools of analysis that were used for descriptive data were frequencies, percentages, arithmetic mean and standard deviation while the statistical tools that were used for inferential statistics were Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and Linear Regression. The Fisher (F) test was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicated that with R²=0.390, F (4,42) =6.719, p=0.000<0.05, H₁ was accepted and it was concluded that procurement of labour had a statistically significant influence on the performance of road construction projects. The study recommends that organizations that deal with road construction should have appropriate policies on procurement of labour since there is a statistically significant relationship between procurement of labour and performance of road construction projects.

Abstract

Correctional rehabilitation programmes are viewed as interventions to promote desired behavior change yet lowered rate of recidivism of sexual offenders has not been attained. It was postulated that participatory design of correctional rehabilitation programmes could be an effective deterrent. To test this hypothesis, a descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample size of 384 respondents who comprised of convicted sexual offenders serving custodial and non-custodial sentences, practitioners and stakeholders within correctional organizations in Nairobi County, Kenya. Data was collected through questionnaires as well as a focus group discussion. The study adopted Skilbeck’s model of programme design that accentuates user participation in a phased programme planning, design and implementation. Results reveal that participatory design of correctional rehabilitation programmes had a statistically significant influence on recidivism of sexual offenders and thus Skilbeck’s model could be modified for developing effective sex offender correctional rehabilitation programmes. The programme building design phase that entailed explicit clarification and confirmation of programmes goals, expected outcomes and mutual learning between designers and practitioners was most significant for effective interventions with sex offenders.  Accordingly, this could have a profound impact on recidivism of sexual offenders. Participatory design of correctional rehabilitations programmes that engage the practitioners as co-designers is recommended.
